A massive data dump of 773 million email addresses and 22m passwords has been discovered on a popular hacking forum. The breach is referred to as collection #1 by the security researcher, Troy Hunt, who discovered it.

This is a significant collection of breached data and Troy Hunt has uploaded to the ‘have I been pwned’ website which allows people to search whether their email address has been involved in a known data breach. The main issue being, that for simplicity, people re use passwords, and data dumps like this can be used by hackers against other sites to gain access, known as credential stuffing.

“…the real risk posed by incidents like this is password reuse and you need to avoid that to the fullest extent possible” Troy Hunt explains
